- Welcome to the website of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Swiss Confederation.
In Korea, Switzerland is known to be a country of beautiful Alps and Yodel songs, a permanently neutralized nation that promotes peace. It is also where Mr. Syngman Rhee, the first president of the Republic of Korea, met his spouse Ms. Franziska Donner in the League of Nations meeting in Geneva.
But most notably, with its GDP per capita exceeding $84,000(‘15) and the highest national competitiveness, Switzerland is recognized as one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Switzerland is also known for its astounding technology in pharmaceutical, chemicals, precision machinery and various other high value-added industries not to mention the banking/financial sector. All these features have implications for Korea which has confronted the middle-income trap for the past 10 years.
Moreover, Switzerland is one of the leading countries in the field of social welfare and has a deep tradition of direct democracy. Despite of being a federal directorial republic consisting of 26 Cantons comprised of over 2,400 municipalities, with four official languages, Switzerland successfully integrated the diversity without any regional, linguistic or religious divide.
Korea and Switzerland established diplomatic relationship in 1963. Switzerland has been a member state of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) since the end of the Korean War, even prior to our diplomatic relationship, and contributed greatly to the stable management of the armistice and peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula for the last 62 years. Switzerland also rendered valuable support for the holding of six rounds of the Four-Party Talks from 1997 to 1999 in Geneva and played a valuable mediating role in the bilateral talks between North Korea and the U.S. in Geneva in February 2012.
In the field of economy and trade, Korea and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA: Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) concluded a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2006. The interdependence between Korea and Switzerland has deepened even further. Indeed, the trade volume reached nearly 3-4 billion USD and the total stock of foreign direct investment (FDI) surpassed 2.6 billion USD in 2014.
After Her Excellency President Park Geun-hye’s state visit in January 2014, cooperation field between Korea and Switzerland has been expanded to the areas of research and development, innovation, vocational education, student exchange and culture, etc. The Korean Government and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea will closely cooperate with the Swiss Government and relevant organizations to deepen our friendly and cooperative relations in a forward-looking way.
We, the members of the Korean Embassy, feel always happy to provide further information to Swiss people who have interest in Korea. We would always be delighted to receive any comments, questions or suggestions you may have.
